The Dutch Enduro season runs by calender year, which seems strange because their season has a hugh summer break. A few Enduros from January until March, then a “summer break” until November with a few more races until December. Dates can not moved because the “trails” are made on open cornfields. Only between October and March farmers will allow the local clubs to use their land. Without the cornfields there would be no Dutch Enduro Series.

The Netherlands, also called Holland, is basically flat like a pancake.  The riders see very little elevation changes in a Dutch Enduro.  They use old landfills and gravel pits for some exitment.  The soil is all sand, short sections of woods and a lot of zig zaging on cornfields. 20-30 % is roads to get everything connected. The special tests are usually held on existing motocross tracks which are lengthened to get the needed mileage. Two loops  for beginners and intermediate (C and B riders) and 3 loops of usually 60 km for the advantance (A and AA) riders.

Most of the Enduros are held in the Eastern part of Holland due to the fact that most farmers in that part of the country have no objection to Enduro and the local government is willing to support the sport. Also the locals have a tolerance for an annual Enduro.

At this moment the best older generation of Enduro riders are Hans Vogels, Erwin Plekkenpol, Amel Advokaat, Ralph Hubers., Pedro Tragter  and Erik Davids.  Upcoming younger riders are Mick Kock, Erald Lammertink and Jirry v. Veen

The Dutch had individual winners at the 6 days in 1993, but have not won any major prizes on foreign soil.  Only a few Dutch rides have competed in the WC Enduro, Gerard Jimmink, Simon Schram, Alfons Hoevers and Henk Knuiman. Motocross’s like Gerrit Wolsink, Gerard Rond, Dinand Zijlstra, Kees v.d. Ven, Henk Seppenwoolde and Erik Eggens all had good showings at a ISDE in the past.

Holland has organized 2 ISDEs which where strangely not held in the Eastern part of the country, but more north (Assen). The providence of Drenthe is known for the Dutch TT road racing track and supported the Enduro community twice with giving them permission for 2 grueling 6 days.

The KNMV (Dutch sectioning body, “Dutch AMA”) supports the Enduro sport as much as they financially can. The have send Trophy teams and Junior teams to many, many ISDE’s with some success. Don’t forget that Holland is just the size of Connecticut.
