DATE: JULY 25 2010 EVENT: ROUND 7 MISSOURI HARE SCRAMBLE CHAMPIONSHIP LOCATION: SAYERSBROOK BISON RANCH, POTOSI, MO. RESULT: OVERALL WINNER Dad and I left around 5:30 sunday morning to go pick up our traveling friends Allen and Caleb Haynes. We got loaded and headed out of Springfield around 6 AM for the 3 hour drive to Potosi. It was actually cloudy and cooler out which felt really nice compared to what we have had, it has been extremely hot hear lately. We pulled in to this new race facility and was really shocked, this place was a landscaped Bison ranch with its own private lake, cabins etc. really beautiful setting. This was the first race ever on the property, so no one really knew what to expect, we pulled in and got set up for a day of racing, by now the sun burned through the clouds and it got really hot and humid. Fortunately they got some rain and the trail conditions should be near perfect. Caleb and I got geared up and went out on a practice lap, it was really sketchy, very rocky and technical which is to my liking. the course was 10.4 miles long, as tight as it was I figured it to be a 4 lap race. RACE: I went to the start and picked me a good line, I was right in the middle of Steve Leivan, and Caleb Wohletz, #1 and #2 guys of the series last year. When the start board dropped I had a pretty decent start going into the woods in 4th behind Wohletz, Lars Valin had the lead with the flying Aussie Mick Kirkness in 2nd, Wohletz 3rd, I was 4th and Leivan was behind me. We had completed almost a lap, at the very end of the loop was a "hard" section and a "easy" alternate. Wohletz chose the easy alternate so I went up the wall ( a giant rock bluff) that was pretty intense, I was able to get around Wohletz for 3rd position before the end of lap 1. On lap 2 I caught up to Mick Kirkness, who by the way is a national level flat track racer, and the guy can flat ride in the trees as well, it was awesome following him on the grass track, he is not afraid to kick it sideways. He let me by after a ways and I caught up to Lars Valin (Six day club team rider), I finally pushed him into a mistake in a creek bed and got around him and was able to hold the lead all the way to the end, after I got around Lars I put my head down and was able to get away a bit and not have the pressure on me, at the end of the day I earned my 3rd overall for the year.
I want to thank Jeremy Wisecup for the awesome pictures.
