The heat and humidity takes it's toll on me and the riders, but everyone worked hard even though the conditions where tough. Training in the heat makes you much more acclimatized and makes you stronger at the races during the summer months. Below is a detailed description of how each event went. June 4-Madison, TN-Cycle Gear Seminar This cycle gear seminar didn't draw much attention, and I was really surprised. There are a lot of Motorcycle enthusiasts in the Nashville/Madison area but not many people showed up to the seminar. I think the riders that did show up enjoyed what we did, and am hoping as we do more there will be more draw. June 5-6-Nashville, TN-Riding School This was a great piece of property that was literally right off of I-24 and only minutes from downtown Nashville! I have never been to a place with such a city location. Ricky Doores, the land owner was a big help in getting everything set-up for the school and he and his son even participated in the 2-days of torture during the school. The school was hot, humid and tough on everyone! I feel we had a great weekend, gained a lot of strength and everyone had great gains in their lap-times at the end of the weekend. Ricky has Mid-south and OMA races at his property and if you ever get a chance to ride there, I know you will enjoy it. Ask him to show you the big natural table-top we made, and the massive log we had to cross! June 11-Hyndman, PA-Youth Riding School This was a Friday class because the youth athletes had a race that Sunday. What a better way to apply what they learned than at a race 2 days after when everything is still fresh in memory! We had a great group of riders that where all friends, and they worked really well together and pushed one another. I had some gnarly hill climbs for them and they gained a lot of confidence once they crested the top. We had a few spills, but everyone stayed safe and I wish I had one more day with them, because it is really hard in just one day to get through everything. I felt the riders made big improvements in body position, balance and overall control of the bike. They are all young riders that have a lot of potential and years to let their natural talent develop. June 12-13-Hyndman, PA-Riding School Hyndman is where I lived for almost 3 years when I first made my move from Washington to pursue the GNCC series in 1999, so it was a lot of fun to go up and see all of my friends again. It is like i have a family when I go up there and and it brought back a lot of memories spending time with everyone and riding with my old riding partner Jimmy Kamauf. Jimmy helped me a ton by laying and scoping everything out for the class. We had big logs, massive hills, plenty of rocks and we even got to ride through the small town on the way to different areas we where working on thanks' to Jimmy and getting the permits to allow us to ride down the streets. The class was hot and the riders where searching for shade at every moment. It was a tough 2-days, but all the riders kept pushing all the way until the end. We had Jimmy as our personal cook too, he made dinner for everyone and it was appreciated by each rider. June 19-20-Rocky Mount, VA-Riding School This school was held at The Woody's property and it is a part of the VCHSS series. A lot of riders consider this their favorite track and after being there, I can see why. This place has about everything you cold ever want in a race track. It has big rivers to cross, hills, rocks, clay, roots, tight woods, open sections and even a little river sand to test the riders' diversity. We had a great 2 days of training and was smoking hot! Jeff and Joey Woody helped me immensely the days prior to the class setting everything up and helping me cut sections of the trail for added obstacles. Jeff also bush hogged us an awesome grass track to do our training on, which was a huge help! The workout portion of the class was in direct sunlight which made for some sweaty athletes, but everyone pushed through for the entire two days. I had a lot of challenges waiting for each of them on the trail to help them gain confidence in their ability and their bikes controls. I found another massive log that was so steep on the other side, we had some of the smaller bike riders endo over the other side! Everyone stayed healthy and made big improvements not only in confidence, but speed and control too. June 24-25-Snowshoe, WV-GNCC University This is a fun event, and I got up on the mountain a day early to get everything set-up for the event. This event is coordinated by the GNCC crew, and all of the Yamaha riders are a part of teaching the students. The riders on the bike side where Paul Whibley, Charlie Mullins, Barry Hawk, Thad Duvall, Randy Hawkins and myself. We had 40 riders on the bike side and the quad side had 40 machines too, so it was a big event! We paired up and each pair did training on specific sections. Charlie and I did turns, body position, balance, proper braking and clutch control drills. Paul and Barry where in the woods teaching how to attack the tough places of the track. Randy and Thad challenged the riders and taught them new techniques on how to climb hills. We had the riders gather in 3 groups: A, B, and C. It was a 2 day event and we all had a great time and the riders where able to pick up some different techniques from each one of the riders they spent time with. We had a big rain out on Thursday afternoon when a thunderstorm pelted the mountain with major rain, so we retreated into the lodge and had a 2 hour talking seminar for the riders. All the pro riders talked about different subjects ranging from bike set-up, training, diet, mental strength, and also what the riders typical week was like leading up to the race. It was a good experience for the athletes to talk to each one of the pro riders and find out what they did on and off the bike to get to the pro level. All in all, a great event at a beautiful facility. Look forward to doing it again in the future! June 26-27-Snowshoe, WV (GNCC)-Yamaha Demo Ride This was a big event for Yamaha, between the Yamaha GNCC University and a 2 day motorcycle demo ride. I had a great spot on the mountain right in a highly trafficked area and drew a lot of riders to come over and test the bikes for free! We had a good amount of riders, but one thing we saw that made many people turn away was the fact that they did not have boots or a helmet. I am going to try and have helmets and boots for next year to let everyone that wants to give the bikes a ride a opportunity to do so, but if you come to an event that has a Yamaha motorcycle demo, bring your gear!
